MacNivel Battery Powered Water Level Monitor – the simple way to monitor water levels (and other liquids) in your tank.
The MacNivel is a simple device that indicates the level of water (and other suitable liquids) contained in a storage tank. It’s compact size, economical price and battery power, make the MacNivel an extremely versatile option for many installations. Ideal for use in camper vans, caravans, mobile Water Bowsers, to name just a few.
How the battery powered water level monitor works
The MacNivel works by connecting one end of a length of multi-core cable to the monitor and inserting the other end of the cable into the water tank (this is effectively the sensor cable).
A section of the outer cable sheath (the part that goes into the tank) is removed, exposing the inner cores (up to 5 cores can be used). These individual cores are then cut to different lengths, corresponding to the different levels of water you want to monitor in your tank.
When the tank is full, all (5) cores are immersed in the liquid. This conducts back to the MacNivel, and when the ‘Test’ button on the monitor is pressed, the level on the LCD monitor is illuminated to its Maximum level. As the liquid level in the tank drops below the different core levels, then only those cores still immersed in water will conduct back to the monitor, illuminating only the corresponding levels on the LCD display.
The MacNivel is powered by a 9v PP3 battery (not included) which is inserted into the back of the monitor and powers the display.
The battery can be easily changed without having to remove the back of the monitor.
What liquids can the MacNivel be used with?
The MacNivel depends on the ability of the liquid being measured, to conduct a current, in order to determine the level of liquid in the tank. Liquids which are good conductors such as drinking water, rainwater, grey water etc. are all therefore suitable for use with the MacNivel.
Liquids which are poor conductors or which may damage the sensing wire (e.g. oils, fuels, purified water), are therefore not suitable for use with the MacNivel.
Positioning and protecting the MacNivel
The MacNivel monitor is not weatherproof and therefore needs to be suitably protected, if using outdoors. (Note that prolonged exposure to low temperatures will also reduce the life of the battery faster).
The MacNivel is supplied with a cradle type wall bracket which the monitor simply slots into. This provides easy access to the battery compartment on the back when replacing.
(Image to right shows MacNivel cradled in the supplied wall bracket).
The length of the sensor cable which can be used with the MacNivel can be any length, up to a maximum of 30 meters (includes the length of [sensor] cable inside the tank).
